Thursday, January 24, 2013 - The third of eight bottles purchased on release and properly stored. It was double decanted and consumed at a BYO restaurant.
Unlike the two prior bottles, this was disappointing. I am not sure if it is in decline now or if the condition was particular to this bottle. The color was good but the nose had a noticeable "cooked" quality that carried into the flavor profile. I will defer final opinion and try another bottle soon.
Based on the disappointment of the previous bottle and another 5 bottles remaining, I opened this one with some trepidation. To my relief, this was excellent. Very youthful with a mix of primary and secondary characteristics on the nose and palate, it is beginning to evidence a little more nuance and complexity than the first bottle I opened last year.
This is really firing on all cylinders now and should provide pleasurable drinking for several more years if the remaining bottles mirror this one. 92 points.
Shattered cork......strained through a stainless funnel filter and decanted for 30 minutes before serving with NY strip steak. In spite of the cork, this was really wonderful tonight. Maybe this is starting to pull out of a long funk. I will try to stretch out the remaining bottles over the next four years.
This was decanted for 45 minutes and the cork was perfect. It was probably the best bottle of this I have opened.
What a perplexing wine. Unlike the earliest bottles we had, this seemed unmistakably California with an opulent nose, luscious flavors, crisp acidity, firm mouthfeel, polished tannins, and the vitality of a more youthful wine. It was a great match to the Moose stew we served. With 3 bottles remaining; based on this bottle drinking or holding are equally good choices.
