Saturday, March 1, 2014 - I love this wine even though I felt teased and somewhat unfulfilled by it. After 16 years it still tastes young and is still a deep gorgeous purple, with a generous and sublime nose of crushed blueberry and minerality that are the hallmark of the northern Rhone that I adore. The nose of a great northern Rhone, in fact, is for me one of the highest pleasure in the kingdom of wine. (When I invigorated the decanter definite animal smells were stirred up, but I hardly picked them up in the glass.)
The mouth was characteristic and pleasing and, amazingly, still somewhat green, but there was a sense of completeness missing in the mid palate that prevented the wine from entering the realm of the stratospheric. The fact that even with something essential missing the wine is still wonderful and interesting says a lot.
