Saturday, August 25, 2012 - Definitely the most expensive wine, on a relative basis, that I have ever enjoyed (I paid $75), this opened up with a load of earth and mushroom on the nose. It just exploded out of the glass on opening. I have been fortunate to cellar it properly, there was hardly any ullage to speak of (about a 1/2 inch in the neck) with a cork that had a little bit of seepage in one or two areas but was basically in like-new condition. After a few hours the nose opened to add a little cheese and smoky currant. The wine was very tight on opening, showing some earth and a hint of the fruit underneath but really a bunch of tannin on top of it all. The wine itself was either carefully racked or fined and filtered as little sediment was evident either in the bottle or on the sides. I was stunned how little sediment this contained. After a couple of hours, the wine showed less tightness, with earthy currant, licorice, wood and mushroom notes. Really fine, but it is a first growth from a top year, what else would be expected?
