93 Points

Friday, February 21, 2014 - Decanted for 1 hour and tried blind. Initial guessed pointed to 1. Andreas 96 Lynch, Nicoletta late 90s Cos.
Open nose, very cabernet sauvignon driven,, secondary but still with good fruit, white pepper, forest floor in a way. On the palate it is still going strong, good weight, none of the 95 issues we so often come across (main reason none of us thought t was a 95) good mid palate fruit and length. Pretty solid effort and very good to drink now. 93

2/24/2014 7:25:00 AM - Could you please explain to me what do you mean by "95 issues?". I am asking because this is my wedding anniversary year and I tend to buy 1995 wines to open on my anniversary, so please help me avoid any traps. Thanks in advance.

The issues we find with 95 is that we sometimes find the wines, to be hit and miss and with sharp edges ( not like tannin which was a the issue with 96) and sometimes a bit flabby in the mid palate . Las cases is a good example which is our least favourite of the 90s ( the 94 being a gem!) cos similarly, Pichon baron .. Pichon lalande is great btw. Generally a merlot year and as it ages the probs with cab Sauv are showing.

2/25/2014 1:32:00 AM - Thanks. I have limited experience with 1995 left bank Bdx, but I have not encountered the issues you descripe, probably because I have not drank the wines you are refering to. This year I opened during my wedding anniversary dinner the 1995 Ducru Beaucaillou which was very good but not great, but last year's 1995 Haut Brion was terrific. Now that I remember, a wine that was relatively disappointing was the 1995 Ch. Margaux, which was unevenly evolved, with the nose showing much more evolution than the angular palate. So for safety reasons I probably have to look elswhere than the Medoc for my wedding anniversary wines. I had some excellent Northern Rhones as well as Tuscanys so far. However I keep a 1995 Lafite for my 20th anniversary (2015). Keep enjoying great wines! Cheers.
