Thursday, October 23, 2014 - Dark ruby red, very pure in color. Decanted 2 hours before tasting. Nose: moderately aromatic. Mainly dark fruits, tar and smoke. Good amount of heat on the nose, nothing herbal or floral of note. Palate: medium weight, smooth and barely perceptible grainy tannins. Great age on the wine, it's packed with integrated flavor that is palate coating. Fruit is on the darker side of cherries, plums and raspberries with a nice addition of burnt orange. Cocoa is present, too, along with just a hint of thyme. Nice moderate acidity. Finish: the "burnt" comes off the orange, which turns into blood orange that dominates. The acidity becomes more lively in this phase, as does the cocoa and thyme. Overall a very nice wine that has an appropriate amount of age and refinement. The syrah and grenache are evident, the mourvedre does not seem to leave much of an imprint on the wine. Very flavorful and enjoyable, but just meets the minimum requirement for depth and complexity at the price point.
