92 Points

Monday, December 31, 2012 - New Year's Eve 2012 Drinks (Kat and Ewen's): Very good. The last bottle I had (in Beaucastel no less) was unfortunately corked. This time round though, from a magnum, the wine was singing. It had a lovely, gently expressive nose, with a complex melange of toasted spice, earth and meat, then black cherries and berries, a curl of smoke and just touch of green herbs. Very classic Beaucastel bouquet I thought. Previous notes seem to suggest that some 750ml bottles are on the decline. However, in this format, the palate showed like a wine at its peak or thereabouts. It was developed, mature and mellow for sure, with softened tannins just losing their chew. But this was also fresh and lively, with deliciously clear flavours of black berries and cherries seasoned with complex little notes of spice, herby tobacco and a nice meatiness in the background. Not the most authoritative of Beaucastels it must be said - this was actually on the lighter side in fact - but it was a really charming, enjoyable wine.
