Monday, June 22, 2015 - I didn't have high hopes for what is effectively the Mouton Cadet of the Penfolds range. Let's just say it proved me wrong. This was a pop and pour with no decant or aeration. It has a really classy nose of sour cherry, cassis and spice with secondary suggestions of earth, instant coffee and maybe tobacco - more than you usually get from a 10GBP bottle anyway. In the mouth it is super-balanced with delicious primary fruit and some nice lifting acids. Okay, it lacks any real textural interest or grip, but sometimes you don't want a super-extracted wine that has to sit in a decanter for hours before you can drink it. Will buy again.

6/27/2015 4:15:00 PM - Out of interest what 10GBP, or indeed 20 GBP, wine needs "to sit in a decanter for hours before you can drink it"? If only! Sadly almost all reds these days seem increasingly to be made in a boring, pop and pour, super-smooth Australian/New World style. Even in Bordeaux and Barolo, grippy tannins and textural interest are pretty much extinct.

I should say it's not totally structureless; there was some of that going on. But take your point that perhaps I'm comparing apples and oranges there...
