Saturday, April 25, 2015 - Mid/high shoulder fill with a cork that, despite its saturation, has actually done its job fairly well over the past 51 years! A light, limpid color. At first, this was very meaty and smoky - not in an appealing way. But over half an hour in the decanter, this actually trimmed itself down and became elegant enough. Star anise, cedar, rosewater, sous-bois. It's dealing with some volatile acidity. Sure, this is at the end of its life - but it's interesting to see the most evolved picture of Pichon Lalande. Not bad for a 64, either. I wonder when they picked. The rain started Sept 27th. PL's neighbor, Latour, picked on the 26th. The best part of this wine was hearing stories about what life was like for my dad and Shep in 1964.
