89 Points

Saturday, May 9, 2015 - The 2012 Celler Cal Pla Black Slate Porrera currently rates as 90 points with the CellarTracker community. This review is a follow up on my notes from November 2014 for the 2011 vintage. The 2012 is a much bolder showing of this wine. This vintage is full of ripe dark berries (i.e., "juicy"), noticeable alcohol (yet not especially hot), a medium-plus body, medium tannins, and medium acidity. The uncharacteristic effervescence that showed in the 2010 and 2011 vintages is no longer present in the 2012. I am surprised that a grenache and carignan blend has so much flavor and fruit-forward character. My typical experience with a grenache is much more minerality and earthiness. However, not with this wine. I would have been way off in a blind tasting. I rate the 2012 Celler Cal Pla Black Slate Porrera 89 points with the potential to stretch to a 91...depending on my mood for a jammy wine (it also drinks well on day two). This wine is likely to be a crowd pleaser, but I can also see it being too overwhelming for some taste preferences. It is definitely worth the price of admission at just under $20 a bottle. No need to wait, it is ready to drink now. Enjoy!
