90 Points

Saturday, May 3, 2008 - Bought a case of this on release. Over the first decade of its life, I opened a bottle or two and found it to be possibily the biggest, most impenetrable wine I'd ever tasted. I therefore vowed to forget about the remaining bottlles for many years. I pulled this bottle out of the locker a couple of years ago but never got to around to drinking it so recent storage was not optimal. Popped the cork (actually had major cork issues so I ended up pushing the cork into bottle and decanting) and the color was as dark as I remembered; not a hint of bricking. Nosed a bit muted and dusty. On the palate, the tannins seem to have resolved themselves and the wine has a smooth sweetness to it. Predominant flavor is blueberry, with echos of the same dustiness on the nose. Finish is a bit drying on the palate. Consumed over the course of two hours and it held up well. All in all, a nice wine now and certainly gives the lie to the idea that Cali wines don't age well.
