Saturday, July 20, 2013 - My first taste of Barolo.
Light ruby red colour, with an orange tinge under the light. Heady aromas of sweet cherry liquor wafting up to my nose as I vinturied it into the decanter. Left to air for 5 hours.
Fine perfumed floral nose. As the vino touched my lips and slid over my tongue, I experienced a throwback to my tasting of NZ pinot noir. The fruitiness was apparent, but with a deeper complexity. As I swirled the wine in my mouth, word that came to mind: fresh, balanced, elegant. Medium finish.
I had always been intimidated by Barolo, due to its reputation of being extremely tannic in its youth, and requiring many years of laying down before approaching drinkability. However, in my humble opinion, I found this Barolo's tannins to be soft and well-integrated.
After about another hour, the wine had developed a hint of chocolate aroma and flavour. Overall, this wine gave me an ethereal feeling. I was left pondering what flavours could have developed had I laid it down in my cellar for a good many more years.
Cheers! Next up, to drink more Barolos, both old and young!
