Wednesday, June 17, 2015 - Nose: Bright red fruit with a slight chalky mineral aspect. It's still pretty closed after two 2 hours of air, but there is an herbal greenness with a little bit of spice that is starting to come out.
Palate: Strong, firm, grippy tannins dominate the palate. There is a deft balance of fruit behind the tannic wall that keeps it from being one dimensional.
Finish: Bright, astringent and fruity. The red fruit (cherry/strawberry) come through here with a tart bite. There is a crisp acidity that works well with the fruit and tannins.
Thoughts: I don't know if it's in a stage between the exuberance of youth and the complexity of age but it seems pretty tight and closed. After 4 hours of air it's starting to open up a little but still pretty reluctant. The structure is there with a bit of fruit and spice that makes me anxious for the future. Even with the reluctance, it's still drinking well now and only has upside in the foreseeable future.
