Saturday, April 29, 2006 - Had this alongside the '98 Coudoulet de Beaucastel and they were of similar quality, but quite different in their characteristics. This one was a bit darker in color. On the nose this was more primary and about big fruit that the CDR, which had much more interest aromatically and more focused mineral-driven palate. The addition of Grenache seems to have added a bright red berry aspect that no other Novy Syrah has. This one also lacks the meaty, smoke and spice notes and 'lushness' that the 100% Novy syrahs have. On night two I paired this with pizza and the freshness of the fruit and the somewhat sharp acidic edge made this a nice match.
