2005 Château Haut-Bergey

88 Points

Monday, July 27, 2015 - PnP. This has reached full maturity with secondary flavors being predominant at this point. Not much fruit as this is primarily composed of cedar, dried herbs, and tobacco. Somewhat drying tannins remain. The first bottle of a case, I left these too long.

Day 2 - I hope the comments about this being in a dumb phase hold true, but I have my doubts. This was flat as can be after storage in the refrigerator. Secondary notes remain but the fruit is lacking and there is no finish on this at all. Score 85.

As I noted with the 2009, I don't think that wine will go beyond 12-15 years and I'm starting to think that about this wine.

This is not the 2000 Haut Bergey.

7/27/2015 7:29:00 PM - It may just be shut down. I really enjoyed the 2000 vintage Haut Bergey after 10 years in bottle, the fruit should come back in but more as dried fruit. One can always hope. I think the 2005 vintage will show its long legs, but many wines require long patience. This wine is still the best value in the Pessac, though the Le Thil Comte Clary was great in 2009 and 2010. SHL bought it after the 2010, so it is no longer a value, as its grapes are in SHL wines.

A lot of people wrote off many of the forensic wines from 2000 but several are still drinking well. I will hold mine further, but our cellaring conditions may very. I have a cool damp passive, which may make things age slower.

7/27/2015 7:40:00 PM - I also had the 2000 and it seemed to have more vibrancy than this wine. The 2006's have been very tannic so that was why I waited on this.

Our cellar is a constant 55 degrees so it should have kept these wines fresher.

7/27/2015 8:23:00 PM - But perhaps not long enough? 2015 Tasting Notes indicate enjoying the remainder beginning in the two to three years it will take to fully emerge from the dumb phase. Had I only the bottle, I'd try for four or five.

7/30/2015 11:29:00 AM - 2006 will take loads of patience as it seems the 2006 have the curse of 1986 and 1996 where they have they strongest tennis and need the most time out of the decade, at least for the first decade of the 21st century. 1998 was brutally tannic as well. I am still holding Cos from 1996 and I expect another 15 years for the more stingy 2006.
