Saturday, June 6, 2015 - We started the evening with 2005 Pommard to go with the fish course. We finished the meal with this Pontet-Canet and cheeses. Maybe it was the sequence or maybe it is just this wine, but it is a huge wine. The nose pours out big juicy fruit. The wine almost seems fleshy. It would likely completely overpower many foods, but paired well with several strong, flavorful cheeses. The wine is bold, but round. There is good acid upon entry and it finishes with silky, smooth tannins. As the bottle aired more (started with 2 hour decant), the bold fruit started to become calm, and the smokiness of the oak aging yielded to some of the characteristic graphite and lead pencil of the Bordeaux. I have had the opportunity to taste several 1st & 2nd growth Bordeaux's from the 2000 vintage. I would say that the Pontet-Canet stands quite tall among these wines with a little more richness and flavorfulness.
