Saturday, January 3, 2009 - New Year's Weekend @ Rob & Lisa's; 1/1/2009-1/4/2009 (Scott's Valley, CA): Tasted blind in a flight of three 2000 Bordeauxs. Decanted for about 3 hours and then double decanted back into the bottle for the tasting. This showed slight bricking at the edges with a blood reddish purple color throughout. On the nose there was pretty heavy tar, spicy oak, currant and some plum. I found this nose to be the most expressive of the tasting at first, but then shut down after being in the glass for about 30 minutes. This just didn't want to give anything up on the flavor, there was some thin dark fruits, minerality and pencil lead, but no where near what I was expecting out of this. We killed a couple of babies this evening. This being one of them, the 2000 Cos d'Estournel being the other. By the time the bottle was being finished off, it began to come around (typical), showing much more spicy fruits and earth. Very well balanced and structured, but it is pretty shut down right now. I would sit on this for at least another 5 years or so, and even then, it will probably only just be coming into its drinking window at that point. Drink between 2015 and 2030.
