Friday, October 9, 2009 - I'll admit straight away I am a Bordeaux man. From the time I could pick up a wine glass I have been entranced with not only the wines but the history of the Chateaux, the varying terroir, and the ageability of vintages like 2005. I ordered three of these as a future and finally received the d'Armailhac in September 2008. Adhering to the rule that a wine must be in my collection at least a year before I put it into play, I could wait no longer. I knew the 2005 d'Armaaihlac was really too young at this point but I don't mind a little tannin. Well I'm getting ALOT of tannin on the palate with excellent grip but not the type that dries out the mouth. I was entranced by the dark magenta color as most of the good cab and even merlot based wines from this vintage tend to be. On the nose this is so layered with extremely tight aromas of tobacco, earth, very dark red and black fruits, and smokey vanilla oak. I think it was Hugh Johnson that said Bordeaux goes down like water and this is no exception as I will have a difficult time not to finish this bottle. The Clerc Milon tends to be a level above this and boy do I look forward to trying that as well. To all of Pauillac and Bordeaux, cheers.
p.s. I am stunned by the reviews that state that this seems dominated by the merlot and even flabbergasted by those stating a light color!
