Saturday, February 6, 2016 - The style of Caggiano reds tends to be bold and in your face, especially when young. Here even the young vines are capable of a tannic, aglianico-driven snarl. Took the better part of two hours to say much of anything. Deep ruby color, shy nose of deep red fruits and ripe but sour cherries, wet rocks and some alcoholic heat. Intensely tannic from the start, dries so quickly against the gums that everything else is held in check. At the risk of swirling it around in the mouth, the attractive cherry sort of breaks free and is joined with raw leather and mineral notes. Not for the faint of heart or for anyone in a hurry, and again, this is the little guy. Will save some for tomorrow when it might start to calm down.
