1979 Château Gruaud Larose

Community Tasting Note

88 Points

Friday, June 11, 2010 - Drank with dinner and no formal notes taken. This was perfectly intact from a pristine bottle. Unfortunately, it was tasting over the hill. On initial open it was showing some fruit, cracked pepper, and mushrooms on the nose. Very light fruit was present on the palate, with some asparagus and the mushroom, with a really grippy, gritty texture. The finished lingered on, but it wasn't evolving at all, primarily showing some earthy mushroom components and the tannins. After this was in the glass for only 10 minutes it lost all of the fruit throughout, primarily leaving some textural elements but not really a tasty wine. A bit of a let down compared to some other recent '79s, and the scores here (which are mainly from quite a bit ago). Perhaps I'll try another, but I do suspect this is very much on the downward slope.
