Thursday, May 10, 2007 - 2007 France Trip - Pegau, Pierre Usseglio, Monpertuis, Vieux Telegraphe, Dinner w/ Philippe Cambie (Southern Rhone): Tasted three samples: #1 (Syrah) from barrel was black/purple, showing high-toned purple fruit, violets, and mushrooms/earth. Concentrated and somewhat hard-edged right now. #2 (mostly Grenache) from a large foudre showed coffee, pepper, red and black fruits, and violets. Great acidity, structure, and concentration. Inky and outstanding. #3 (modely Grenache) from a smaller foudre was sweeter and more fragrant than #2. An impromptu blend of #2 and #3 was very impressive. All of these confirmed my impressions from last year. Pegau’s 2005 looks to be terrific.
