Saturday, March 27, 2004 - Dinner with Mom and Bob at Lampreia. I was stunned when I pulled the foil on this wine, as the exposed surface of the cork was pristine. The fill was also outstanding, and the cork when it came out was just barely stained near the base, clearly the best provenance I have ever seen for a recently purchased 1982. The nose was dominated by roasted black fruit with some spicy clove and a hint of tobacco and tar. On the palate this was very tight initially, but over the course of three hours it opened up quite a bit to show pure, sweet, nearly confected fruit, very slutty and forward. I was quite amazed at how primary this bottle was compared to the 4 other times I have tasted the same wine. In particular, this bottle seemed a decade younger than I expected, barely ready to drink and still showing tons of baby fat. In fact, it was surprisingly reminiscent of the flavor profile I tasted on bottle of 2000 Léoville Poyferré recently. Awesome stuff!
