Thursday, June 18, 2015 - Popped and poured and followed for 90 minutes. Dark, red fruit, brooding Cali Cab that is still in its infancy despite 11 years of age. This is the oldest R-M Cab I have opened. Bought direct "en primeur" from the winery. Powerful. The oak, whatever their once was, has integrated and the tannins are not fierce. No mouth pucker. The wine has smoothed out but the tertiary flavors have not yet blossomed. If I compare this with, let's say, a 2000 left bank cab-based Bordeaux I had last month that I also bought e.p., this is no where near as advanced in taste or in color, and the 2000 Bordeaux was not yet at its peak. IIRC, this wine was about $35 -$40 on release and was worth the ticket, and the wait. The wine does not quite have the finesse of the later SVD Rivers Marie Cabs, but represents a data point in the evolution of the winery. I remember about 9 years ago when someone on Ebob organized a blind tasting of 2004 Cali pinots and the R-M was the consensus WOTN. That was the first I ever heard of the winery and I signed up the next day. Glad I did. I have a full vertical of the cabs back to the inaugural 2003. I was very upset one year when I realized I had none of the 2005 until I contacted the winery to see if I could buy one to complete the set and they told me that they never made one that year.
