96 Points

Wednesday, April 15, 2015 - Color: opaque indigo core -> dense ruby rim: NOT the normal appearance of a 16-year old Cali Syrah. Crazy intense bouquet of charcoal, roasted sirloin, bacon, some Alban funk (low-level here), smoke, a little black pepper and a notable floral component (violets?). Just a stupendous nose and one of the best Cali Rhone bouquets I've ever had the chance to sample. Enjoyed the stellar '01 Reva just a couple of nights ago and I'd have to say that this eclipses even that fine performance as of right now! This wine is less thickly extracted on the palate and gains a little bit in that respect: acidity is more lively that the '01. Black fruit, smoked meats and yes, that earlier tasting note of blood orange, allied with a huge palate presence and looooong finish all combine to make this one amazing, compelling wine.

I don't normally break out bouquet from the palate but in this case, that nose is just a killer: if rating seperately, I'd have the rate the nose about a 98 while the palate comes in at a more 'normal' 93-94!
