Sunday, April 4, 2010 - My first big Cali Cab, and what a place to start. This drinks very much like a very good Bordeaux with a similar amount of age on it. What marks it as not is its viscosity - this is thicker, creamier in the mouth than Bordeaux, and less exotic and spicy, more pure fruit. But boy is it pure. The black cherry is almost overwhelming, and chocolate and blackcurrant fill up the nose and palate. Pierre says he gets aniseed on the finish. This is not over the top though, at 13.5% it holds well. Probably at its peak now - still has a fair amount of acidity (part of what keeps it refreshing despite the creaminess) and some tannin, but will likely start to fade fairly soon. I'm not quite as high on this as other people on this site. I'd like to see a little more complexity, but for big, pure fruit, I can't imagine it gets a whole lot better than this.
