2004 Shafer Relentless

Community Tasting Note

89 Points

Sunday, April 6, 2008 - This was bottle number 4 following a 2006 Conundrum, a 1990 Haut Batailley, and a 2004 Shafer One Point Five. Out of the 4 bottles, this came in second. The 1990 Haut Batailley was a sweet, aged treat. The 2006 Conundrum was an adventure in fresh sweetness. The Relentless had a muted nose, and a black color. On the palate, however, there was a richness to this wine. Plums, raisins, prunes and a port-like richness. While still quite tanic, there was a depth to this wine, which really showed the weakness of the 2004 Shafer One Point Five. This was a nice, rich, decadant wine. New world, and complex. No where near the sweet, aged 1990 Haut-Batailley, but fun nonetheless.
