90 Points

Sunday, May 26, 2013 - Opaque purple, v little bricking; light in the glass, but clinging to the edges with long legs. On the nose: tarry oak, black cherry/raspberry fruit, vanilla, a more subtle bell pepper component. On the palate: initial hit of big red fruit (raspberry, blackberry), with plenty of vanilla/oak flavors before mid-palate acidity emerges, then some coffee and cigar box notes that linger for a medium long finish, over which the dark fruit reasserts itself at the back of the throat. Label says 14.5% alcohol, though from the extraction I would have guessed more. Tannins semi-decently integrated, but I daresay this could have gone a few more years in the cellar while they continued to soften up.
No doubt about it, this is an archetypal big CA cabernet, doing exactly what those wines are supposed to do. I don't go for this style every day, but sometimes you want a 800 lb gorilla to go with the rib-eye steaks you're throwing on the grill; on those nights, you could do a lot worse than this bottle.
