Monday, October 23, 2006 - Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I’ve been sitting on this wine for well over a decade, for the most part fearing that it was well past it’s prime. Let’s face it, this is an 89 from WA, there just aren’t too many good wines from back then (Quilceda aside). Finally, after years of seeing it in the cellar, I pulled it out along with the backup that I was certain I would open immediately afterwards. Slightly depressed cork which instantly crumbled when I tried to extract it – certainly not a good sign. Poured with no decanting. Still a dark ruby red with some orange bricking at the rim. In a word, wow! Not only is this wine not past it’s prime, but it’s drinking beautifully at it’s peak. Very nice balance between fruit and tannins, there is still good structure and texture with some dark cheery, crushed leaves, leather and a bit of earth. It’s still very rich with fruit. Velvety smooth finish that lingers for a medium length.. Perhaps the finished bottle of Columbia that I’ve had.
