90 Points

Friday, July 4, 2008 - Drank at Mezza9 with Elsa, great pairing with char-grilled tenderloin. Deep purple colour. Classic Southern Rhone nose of dark cherries, blackberries, leather and a touch of meatiness. On the palate, cherry, black pepper, whiffs of bacon and a really nice smokiness that complemented the charred flavours on the crust of the beef. Firm, but slightly powdery tannins and great balancing acid (like so many Rhones from the wonderful 2005 vintage). After time in the glass, the wine took on some richness, showing riper, sweeter cherry flavours, somewhere in between maraschino and cherry-flavoured licorice candy. It may have lacked the incredible richness and concentration of some of the 2005 Southern Rhones that I have tried, but I found this rather elegant, really integrated and drinking very nicely. Rather lacking in length, it finished with a streak of hot stones and a touch of iron that dropped of rather short and abruptly. However, overall a really enjoyable wine (even though I knowingly got fleeced for it!)
