Sunday, June 15, 2008 - Decanted and drunk over 3 hours. Very good signs on opening: deep complex nose of blackcurrants, mulberries and earth. Dense and weighty palate - very youthful, still a bit beefy and inky around the edges but it has loads of ripe cassis fruit that seems to be the mark of Left Bank wines in this vintage - making them approachable young. Years to go till this is mature. After a couple of hours - less forthcoming, more awkward, fruit less showy - clearly not fully out of a slightly closed phase though by no means dumb. Opens out after a time in the glass but not as impressive as the first pour. If drinking now best to pop and pour, better to leave for another 5-10 years to see it really shine. Great potential for a classic Leoville Barton. 92 potential, 89/90 for now.
