Friday, March 7, 2014 - Deepening golden colour. Gorgeous nose displaying tropical fruits, mango, a hint of toast and some botrytis, which is a bit untypical for a Spätlese but doesn't feel out of place. The flavour has a rather high amount of sweetness but with a searing acidity for balance, leading into a long finish with notes of sweet, ripe blood oranges. Lovely, lovely wine which has decades left of life in it. This particular bottle felt almost like a cross between a Spätlese and an Auslese despite the fact that stated sugar levels aren't particularly high.
I'm really falling in love with classy German rieslings like this, they pair with a huge array of food (this particular bottle complemented a Szechuan shrimp dish wonderfully), they can be enjoyed very young or very old, and they come at a fraction of the price of most of the wines from other historical regions of the world. I'm glad I have a few bottles left of this beauty so I can see what it tastes like in a decade or two.
