flawed

Tuesday, July 26, 2011 - By all accounts, this bottle was mistreated. It was stored on its side in the refrigerator for probably 6 months, maybe even a year. It was still under pressure, but the cork didn't expand back like it should when opened, and was pretty waterlogged. The drink seemed oxidized, but not quite completely so. There was no tropicality on this, just sharp, lemony granny smith apple and a very slight yeastiness on the nose. The bubbles were nonstop, but the taste and finish were neither exciting nor complex. All in all it seemed to hold up to the mistreatment, but in general don't store champagne on its side and don't store it in the fridge. If it is in there, don't take it out unless you drink it. It's all chemistry and physics here. I still think it's pretty good that it could hold up to this, and this is usually one of my standards. I'd give it an 87 for putting up with what it was put through.
