Together with a juicy beef this is a stellar wine, but quite frankly - this favorite of mine did not perform as well without food. Perhaps a little too heavy and full bodied to enjoy on its own. Also, maybe the contrast to the light Chinon Cab Franc (Chinon La Baronnie Madeleine) we had earlier was too much.
