Friday, April 10, 2015 - Appearance: Very little loose deposit but a lot of film on the inside of the bottle's downward side. Medium red toward brick red colour with broad brick orange edge.
Nose: Prunes and heavy plum jam, dust and some old leather. Some volatile acidity also with the slightest hint of strawberry vinegar.
Taste: Slightly sweet attack, round and very mature fruit with some sweetness, medium body, finishing on a more tannic and slightly spicy note. Relatively long aftertaste.
Very mature and past its peak but not totally over the hill. Drinkable although perhaps more "interesting" than exciting.
DAY 2 (after opening): Wow, the dust and volatile touch of vinegar is completely gone and the nose is now pure, mature prune & dark plum fruit. The body has also sharpened up a bit and is more defined and structured albeit still mature. It's still past its peak but not by as much as it felt like yesterday (when I estimated it to "should have been drunk by 2007", now i update that estimate to 2012).
Quite enjoyable given its age (27 years!) and origins, not to mention the ridiculously low price. Now I'm quite looking forward to opening the 1985, which is supposedly a better vintage for Periquita....
