Thursday, February 28, 2013 - This is fragrant from the get-go with the textbook Pauillac scent of lead pencil shavings and rich red fruits. I remember Lynch-Bages went through a long run of critical acclaim in which several people called it something of a poor man's Mouton. Well, they're both Pauillacs, and I guess that makes a bit of sense because this just screams Pauillac, but the tannin here is definitely more rugged and brawny than Mouton's, which tends to strike me as very refined even when the wine itself is a heavyweight. Well, that's the story for most of the bottle of this 2000 Lynch, but after two or three hours in the decanter a lot of the tannin manages to melt away and reach a level of refinement that I definitely wouldn't have predicted on the basis of the first glass. And the underlying material, which had started out all rich and primary red fruits, stays fairly rich but takes on a more savory cast. This is the second significant 2000 I've had which has shown surprisingly open and expressive 10 years down the line, still very youthful of course but justifying the excitement way back when -- think I will have to see what's going on with the rest...

3/3/2013 8:08:00 AM - Very good note. I confess my first thought on reading it was of an old cereal commercial, "Mikey likes it!"
