Monday, August 25, 2014 - Well, my jaded, modern Bordeaux-spoof hating palate was quite surprised by this lovely, beautiful wine. Right in the beginning at pop & pour, the wine was a little worrisome, as there was some heat, too ripe fruit, eucalyptus, etc. But quickly -and for another day- the wine nearly beamed. It gave up complex dark red cherry fruit perceptions, that were fleshy and round. While it did not have the bright red fruit that the 1989 had at about the same age, this was still deep and fleshy, and hinted at a smooth tannic backbone. There was also earth and soil and beautiful claret aromas. I did not drink this with food, but it was delicious as a stand alone wine. Some might worry at its soft fleshy side, and I cannot say if it will age as well as some of the past beauties from this Chateau, but it is quite delicious now at 14 years old. I liken it to the 2009 Faiveley Clos des Cortons. Not that they are even remotely comparable in taste, but in that the CdC was the first "new style" Faiveley that I tasted and it stood in stark contrast to older vintages. This wine has similar comparisons to its older siblings yet is delicious.
