Sunday, April 12, 2015 - Appearance: Transparent red / brick red with medium wide red-orange rim. Sediment as well as quite a bit of bottle film (decanted).
Nose: Dark plums, strawberries, leather.
Taste & palate: Fresh, quite a bit of acidity but mixed with some very soft and sweet, matured red strawberry and raspberry fruit. Medium to medium light body. Nice and quite mature but slightly spicy tannins appearing form the middle of the taste curve and hanging in, together with the mature fruit, to the very end of the long aftertaste.
Food wine! Went very well with cream based beef casserole with lots of onion and mushrooms, matching the sweetness from the onions and the cream perfectly.
At 20 years this wine is mature and time has softened some of its edges but it's very much alive. I would say its's a wine in a rather traditional Portuguese style, but in the fruitier sense, as opposed to in the "dried to death in barrel" sense. Different and refreshing! Wish I had more bottles - and if so I would drink them now and over the next 2-3 years.

UPDATE: 4 days after opening (kept refrigerated in a full, smaller bottle) there is no noticeable deterioration and the wine is just as "sweet & sour fresh" as when it was first opened.
