Saturday, March 2, 2013 - This bottle was apparently very well kept prior to my purchase - mid-neck fill with a cork that was not at all soaked through. I did lose half of the cork in the bottle on my first attempt but thankfully was able to recover the rest prior to pouring. Notable for virtually no sediment in the bottle.

WOW, what a surprise! This wine from a mid-tier California producer is actually drinking very well as a mature Cabernet. Tertiary fruit and structure on the nose with some forest floor, mushroom, and stewed fruit/wet red clay notes. The tasting group had it pegged, interestingly enough, for an older Italian red or Chateauneuf. More of the same on the palate, with solid remaining weight, stewed fruit and, yes, an unexpected hint of garrigue. The finish is medium length with a tiny hint of sweetness on it (not oxidation, but a good sweetness).

Of course, as with any older bottle, you must have a well kept bottle - but if you do, I think this wine which is probably juuuuuuuust past peak will drink well for another 1-2 years.
