94 Points

Thursday, November 27, 2014 - I bought this magnum of '93 Reserve on a visit to Storybook Mountain back in the mid-nineties. Mr. Seps, the founder/owner, wasn't the friendliest man I've met on a vineyard tour but I consistently heard that his reserve Zinfandels were exceptionally long lived wines. Finding an appropriate opportunity to pull out a magnum of zinfandel proved difficult and as such this wine sat in my cellar for close to 20 years. Thanksgiving 2014 seemed as good a time as any to bring it out and pull the cork.

I'm certainly glad I made this choice. This is a remarkable wine and dispels the notion that Zinfandels should be drunk early and without much critical appreciation. I love this wine. It bears no resemblance to the full throttle, high octane Zinfandels championed by the likes of Turley. In the decanter, it exhibits soft, red hues and has almost a Burgundy feel in the mouth. Notes of bright cherry are complemented by the softest of tannin and acidity on a long finish. The wine is soft, round and lush. A perfect match for Thanksgiving dinner. I hardly expected to finish the magnum but I now suspect we will have no problems emptying the bottle. This will probably be drunk straight through dessert leaving a Trimbach '92 Riesling unopened.
