Community Tasting Note

Sunday, July 24, 2011 - Drank in a hotel room without a decanter, which it really needed, so opened and left to breathe for several hours. Also drank from a small glass, which didn't give it the best chance to show its true self. However.... deep totally opaque black cherry colour. Nose is classic St. Julien cedar planks, some warm tarmac, toasted oak, warm ripe black cherries, hints of cream soda and vanilla pods. Palate is ripe black and red cherries framed by fairly austere and definitely grippy but yeilding tannins, with good silky but acidic mouthfeel, earth on the mid-palate and pronounced tobacco leaf and dry earth on the back end. Rather short and not much resonance but the lively fruit makes it very enjoyable. Its pleasure will fade with the fruit, which I expect will happen within 2 years or so. To steal a CTer's moniker, this is not to everyone's taste but is definitely an Englishman's Claret......would be good with roast beef and horeseradish. Great value.
