Friday, October 2, 2009 - 4 hours in decanter. My first go at a Serre Nuove, although the "grand vin" from Ornellaia is one of my faves. Very dark in the glass with more than a touch of purple. Nose shows plenty of oak but decent complexity. Blackcurrant, a little iron and a creamy toffee note. It's actually very "Ornellaia"! Good fruity attack with a nice balance and plenty of fresh acidity and minerality. Some anise and savoury hoi sin/soy in here as well. Perhaps this doesn't quite have the concentration or complexity of its big brother, and the tannins are not as fine, but this young wine is a worthy stablemate, with plenty of character. Finish is qute drying and just a tiny bit tough. Plenty to like here, now and over the next 10 years or so. A fine wine in its own right, and does all that a second wine should admirably, reflecting the style and profile of the main event in a slightly lighter and more accessible package. Will improve. 89+

EDIT ; After 24 hours in decanterthis hasn't really budged. Maybe a tiny hint of cedary complexty coming through. 89+
