96 Points

Monday, January 9, 2012 - I brought a bottle of this to a party and am doing this TN by memory. I would say that the 2001 is now fully mature and open for business and really drinking extremely well. Here's a TN from 2010 that I've revised very slightly to reflect the wine from Saturday night. Quite good, very burgundian. I sometimes wish that all CDP would present this way: lighter in color than the last time I tried this wine but still a deep purple, aromatic but very much in the griotte cherry and red currents end of the range, with complex leather and spice cake aromas, garrigue, provencal grilled lamb... unlike in 2010, when this came across as very taut and almost a bit dry on the palate, in early 2012 the wine has relaxed and seems much softer and friendlier. The finish is light, long, very complex and very supple in a way that makes you keep wanting another sip. All of us loved it. I see that many rate this wine in the 92 point range; the difference is that I actually prefer a lighter, more balanced style. The 2001 Clos des Papes is very different from the monster wines from this producer in hotter, drier vintages. So if you love the Clos des Papes 2003, yes, you'll think this is a 91 or 92 bottle. But I happen to dislike the 2003 and similar Clos des Papes vintages and for me, this 2001 is awesome.
