Tuesday, January 31, 2012 - Medium ruby with mature, tawny edge. Very complex nose-the most prominent part is cool and herbal, but then some restrained red fruit, strong tobacco and bark. At cellar temperature, its acidity made it seem tart, but as it warmed, this receded to reveal an exceptionally well balanced, classic, completely savory southern Rhone. It's been 3 years since I last tasted this, but I was struck as much now as I was then by how much lighter in weight and how much more angular in structure this wine is compared to more recent vintages. Take your pick, but personally, I would unequivocally cast my vote for this style, which sacrifices nothing in terms of flavor yet provides a better match with food and more refreshment. I can't see it getting significantly better from here (since its fruit seems on the verge of fading) and accordingly, I will try to accelerate consumption of my remaining bottles.
