97 Points

Monday, August 4, 2003 - This bottle was purchased two days prior to consumption. I had been advised by the wine merchant that the wine appeared to show bottle shock or simply be shut down. This bottle shows neither. Deep ruby in color, there is a nearly immediate intense nose of blackberries, black plums, crushed peppercorns, "herbes de provence" and licorice. Full-bodied on the palate, with immense but incredibly supple tannins on the palate. Similar flavors as for the nose. The finish is like velvet and it goes on and on. To date, this is probably the best Chateauneuf that I have tasted, definitely the best 2001. Given the tannins (albeit supple), I'm sure that the wine will shut down at some point. However, it has the structure to age beautifully.
