Friday, February 15, 2008 - It's been a few months since I last enjoyed this wine at Eric LeVine's wonderful home as a handful of locals got together to sample through a vertical of Clos des Papes designed to root out issues with the various 2003 lots (and we found none - the 03's showed beautifully, but that is a previous thread). Tonight, the 2001 stood on its own as an accompaniment to dinner at How To Cook A Wolf. In a word - fantastic. I was not as enamored of this wine in the company of the bruiser brethren of 2003 and 2005 (although others were), but without those wines to overshadow it or tire the palate (depending on your perspective), this positively shined. Rich notes of garrigue, red and black plums, and dust lead to a soft, but oily and thick mouthful of sweet fruit, with nicely accompanying grip. There are some hints of shroomy, meaty notes that add another layer of nuance. The finish is long and clean without any drying sensations. A fantastic showing with a bevy of appetizers and fettucine with fresh sauteed black trumpet mushrooms. This window has opened.
