Wednesday, November 26, 2008 - Medium dark with early fading at the rim. What a kaleidoscopic, evolving set of aromatics! Here goes-right out of the bottle, sexy. perfumed strawberry, caramel, and garrigue. Then, it turned in on itself and tightened, with Mourvedre rearing its head, showing black and blueberry fruit, damp earth, and coffee. Finally, crystallized violets, a riper, figgy component, and the first glimpse of secondary bouquet. In the mouth, medium weight, striking acidity which first assaulted the palate but then settled down after seeming prickly and out of place at first, and a savory brew of just ripe fruit without undue fat or sweetness. This is a wine of unbelievable verve and complexity, and it is a far cry from the many fashionable (and great) 100% old vines Grenache cuvees. It evoked more diverse descriptors than virtually anything else I've tasted recently, but I beg to differ with those who feel it is completely ready to go. I think it still needs several years to come together. Having said that, fascinating, a challenge to keep up with, and extremely enjoyable tonight.
