Friday, November 6, 2009 - Words cannot not describe how much of a treat this wine truly is, especially if you are a fan of great syrah. This is by far in the Top 10 of wines that I have been lucky enough to experience over the years. This bottle was opened for 4 hours, and then decanted a 1/2 hour before serving. The first thing you'll notice is the ridiculous, dark, almost black ink color. WOW is this wine dark. On the nose, tons of dark black fruits: blackberry, plum, blueberry, and spice, with hints of tar and rubber. Also slight hints of a sweet vanilla oak. On the palate, this is smooth and elegant, with hints of blueberry, chocolate, creamy dark fruits, slightly shy of candied, and a hint of anise. All I can say is that this is a huge wine, and is not for the faint at heart. The finish lingers for a minute plus, and this wine is just a pure joy. I would recommend holding this wine for another 3-5 years plus, as I think it will be peaking after that timeframe. If you are going to drink it now, I would suggest a long decant at cellar temp prior to serving. In trying this wine at such a young stage, I was expecting it to be a little rough around the edges, showing a lot of alcohol, and harsh tannins. Not the case at all, and well deserved kudos go to Manfred ad Elaine for crafting such another outstanding and unique wine! Cheers! 95-96 points
