Wednesday, October 27, 2010 - Old Barolos and Riojas (Incontro, Robertson Quay): There may have been some kind of flaw in here that made the wine a little strange. Not TCA, it was not undrinkable certainly, but just not all that great. Nose showed really aged characteristics of iron, blood and rust and spice flakes, along with more unusual wooly socks, and a roasted fishy that carried on into the palate. Here, there was still fresh acidity, almost tart, very orangey, but with some dark fruit left, along with a lot more blood and iron and a little tripe and, again, that little fishy, almost bonito-flake like top-note. Finish has hollowed out a bit, with a metallic linger and some spice. A real back-down-to-earth moment after the stunning pair of Riojas. Not quite dead yet, but this was certainly tottering towards death's door.
