Monday, December 21, 2009 - Secret Santa gift! Popped and poured as per usual. COLOR: Dark opaque (but not cloudy) violet. NOSE: It was a bit closed at first, as expected, but opened up to reveal dark fruits, spice, and some earthiness. Not nearly as hot as I had anticipated. Actually, not much heat on the nose at all. TASTE: This was a very smooth wine. Tannins and acidity were well balanced. There was a base of the same dark fruits - mainly blueberry, but also plums and maybe some blackberry. This was overlayed with graphite and black olives. The finish was long - at least 30 seconds, but very soft. Not the kind of 30 second finish where you are simply feeling the tannins strip the rest of the enamel off your teeth. OVERALL: This was a fantastic surprise. It paired very nicely with a skirt steak. (4+13+17+7)
