2006 Thomas Pinot Noir Dundee Hills

Friday, July 5, 2013 - Oh my god.

I have tasted many a good bottle of wine. And I have had this very same wine before, without fully understanding the potential that lay within.

But this nose, right now, (and the perfume is the allure of pinot, isn't it though) is to die for. And the elegance with which the body and soul and freshness speaks of, is nothing but a halelujah moment.

I struggled with the sex-less translation of the Rubayat by Fitzgerald, and was bewildered by the spiritual intellectualism of the swedish translator, the mad baron Hermelin. But now, the metaphor of wine as epiphany and truth, and harmony with the self (and god, if you are a believer), is as evident and true as water.

I found frequent pleasure in wine but rarely the jouissance of which Monsieur Roland Barthes speaks of. But now, I am experiencing tingling sensations in my toes and hair which is growing into an orgasmic crescendo. The synaptic recognition must be equal (I do not know, for I am ignorant) to the heroin slave's rush of relief and complete satisfaction.

In the past, with all the love I have for the willamette and its vineyard shepherds, at times, I have doubted (read my other tasting notes of wines by John Thomas, the apostle of pinot noir), not least this vintage, 2006, from oregon, but now I do believe.

And I have two more translucent ruby coloured bottles.

7/8/2013 10:26:00 AM - So it was good, I take it? Interesting, 2006 wasn't a great WV vintage and I've been culling my cellar of 06's because I didn't see them standing up to longer storage. Do you think this wine has the stuffing for more aging? At 99 points, it's difficult to imagine this will improve...

7/9/2013 11:37:00 AM - Brix - it was that good. I am no expert, and only call them as I see 'em when they come. I would drink it now or in the next couple of years. Why wait? And as for WV 2006 more generally, I never bought much because I felt they were too hot or lacking in structure, or both, as was the case for many of the 2003s and 2009s. Of the 40 WV 2006 PN tasting notes I have rated, only the St innocent Anden and the Hamacher scored above 90 for me, besides this one. I never would have guessed that this was a 2006, if blind-tasting. Which speaks volumes of the craftmanship involved in making this wine.

7/9/2013 12:45:00 PM - Thanks Erik - sounds like our tastes are similar, and it's encouraging to know that this wine was so well made in a challenging vintage. Looking forward to opening this one sometime soon!

7/9/2013 1:51:00 PM - one small caveat: I don't think it ever had the time to even reach room temperature before we emptied it. So will not vouch for what the expression is if the bottle is left sweating too much heat in the oregon summer eve...
