1989 Château Léoville Poyferré

Tuesday, February 12, 2013 - CNY Dinner 2013 - Welcoming the Year of the Snake (William & Gina's): Fourth bottle - this was very good, but worryingly advanced, perhaps affirming the impression from the last bottle that this is starting to go downhill. It had an expressive left bank nose, with lots of green capsicum and tobacco leaf swirling about the ripest cassis and black berries aromas. nice. Green shades. Very Poyferre in its shades of green amidst the ripe dark fruit I thought. The palate too was very much characteristic of the house style and the 1989 vintage. Ripe, warm and voluptuous, it offered up fleshy, sappy mouthfuls of cassis and black berries seasoned with little bits of spice and tobacco smoke, sweet. There was still a semblance of structure lent by ripe tannins towards the finish, and the wine was nicely balanced, good, but there were signs that it was just starting to come unknitted at the seams, with a certain looseness affecting both the attack and midpalate. This is the first really top-notch 1989 where I have noticed something like that – one hopes it has something to do with the provenance of the bottle, but it may well be that it is a bell-weather signaling that this lovely vintage is finally winding down after giving pleasure for quite a few years.
